• Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum’s Nuclear Energy Committee Discusses Energy Challenges in Jordan

20 Apr 2017 AMMAN – Under the Chairmanship of HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, the Nuclear Energy Committee of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum (TAGKF) held a meeting to discuss the challenges in the energy sector with the participation of specialists and experts in the field of energy and nuclear energy.

Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh stressed the importance of the Committee chaired by Professor Marwan Suleiman Mousa, assistant professor of Physics, Department of Natural Sciences at Mu'tah University and chairman of the Association of Jordanian Physicists, in developing recommendations to solve the nuclear energy problems in Jordan.

He urged the Committee to cooperate in order to develop a report or guide that clarifies strategies and solutions highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of adopting nuclear energy projects to be submitted to decision-makers.

During the meeting, members of the Committee stressed the enormous impact of the energy problem in Jordan and therefore the need for a nuclear project to avoid previous issues such as the interruption of Jordan’s Egyptian gas supplies.

They also highlighted the importance of developing and implementing nuclear energy projects according to all nuclear and radiological safety standards.

In addition, they highlighted the importance to implement the nuclear project after conducting extensive studies since there are many alternatives that can be used rather than nuclear energy as it will cost the Treasury billions of dinars and therefore increase the indebtedness.

On the other hand, they stressed the need to have an alternative to renewable energy, as it may encounter various natural causes.

The attendees also suggested the inclusion of specialists from Jordan Atomic Energy Commission to join the Committee.
