• On the "World No-Tobacco Day": ‘Abu-Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum’ Organizes Panel on ‘Phenomenon of Tobacco Smoking: Reality and Aspiration’

    AMMAN – Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum (TAG-KF), a member of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global (TAG.Global), has organized a digital panel entitled: “Phenomenon of Tobacco Smoking, Where to? Reality and Aspiration” on the occasion of the World No-Tobacco Day through live streaming on the Forum’s Facebook page. The panel was broadcast on Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Business and Culture Radio & TV.

    For that purpose the Forum hosted Dr. Nour Obeidat, director of the Control Office at King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC), and Ms. Zeina Shahzada, a founding member of the Tobacco-Free Jordan Association, in addition to Dr. Zainab Al-Kilani, chairman of the Alliance of Jordanian Universities Against Tobacco & Smoking.

    In her remarks Dr. Obeidat stated that the establishment of the Cancer Control Office at the KHCC aims at supporting the Jordanian community and the Ministry of Health in their fight against tobacco to prevent all the practices and habits that increase the risk of cancer, and at the same time, to maintain a healthy lifestyle for cancer prevention.

    Dr. Obeidat also affirmed that the KHCC believes that the fight against cancer and its causes is considered a social and national responsibility, praising the role TAG-KF plays in supporting the Center’s efforts and promoting the national campaign against cancer.

    For her part Ms. Shahzada said that the Tobacco-Free Jordan Association pursues its work in an orderly manner with the Ministry of Health, KHCC, and the World Health Organization (WHO) to develop a strategy that would capitalize on the youth and children’s awareness, to extend a unified policy to build healthy habits for a healthy generation.

    Dr. Al-Kilani addressed the academic role in raising awareness of the issue within the universities, where a number of them have made  remarkable achievements, such as: Princess Sumaya University for Technology, the Faculty of Rehabilitation Sciences – University of Jordan, and Jadara University, which all  announced their institutions smoke-free and accordingly received certificates accredited by the KHCC.

    For his part, Mr. Fadi Daoud, executive director of TAG-KF and Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global (TAG.Global) Education and Youth Consultant, who moderated the session, pointed out that the digital virtual session was organized in conjunction with the World No-Tobacco Day, observed on May 31 every year; a global celebration to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of smoking and tobacco use.

    The session came in line with the Forum’s national role in supporting the efforts of the WHO to help smokers and tobacco consumers to quit, as well as to encourage governments, communities, groups, and individuals to recognize the magnitude of the problem and take appropriate action.
